A player chooses a class by wearing a specific item related to that class (a badge, etc). This item will grant them the special abilities, and access to special equipment (if any) of that class, but in return they will be restricted to either Light Weapons, Light Armor, or both, to compenstate for the abilities. Core classes do not require picking a class, and have unrestrained access to all 'Standard' (i.e, not class restricted) weapons and armors. In return, they get no Abilities or Group Bonus.
There are 3 types of armor, weapons, and equipment:
-
Standard represents the strongest weapons and armor. It is available to all classes unless restricted.
-
Light is a lower strength, available to all classes. Almost every class has at least one Restriction.
-
Class is a weapon, armor, or other equipment restricted to one or more classes
Classes are categorized by 5 archetypes that loosely define the role of the class:
-
Core is a generic archetype with no role-enabling abilities or group bonus, but no restrictions
-
Defender is a tank, able to take damage and dish some back
-
Striker is a hard hitter, but less defensive strength than a defender
-
Leader classes focus on self and group buffs, and non-damaging special maneuvers/actions to influence combat
-
Controller influences the battlefield and alters the zone, by placing items or manipulating opponents
Each class will get 3-6 semi-unique abilities, which includes passive (automatic) and active (player-activated) abilities. There may also be some passive and active racial abilities that everyone in the race gets, but those will be limited.
Classes are not customizable; this remains the realm of Talents which will allow tweaking the character. One of the Talents being considered is 'Class Focus' which may boost the performance of some class abilities. Talents will replace the Abilities tree, focusing mostly on passive bonuses and one-off equipment or limited use abilities.
There is a special archetype
Remort listed for each race. Remorts will either be a special class with no restrictions on equipment access and a selection of skills, or will allow using any class without their restrictions. They would require a level 100 character in the race you wish to remort into (and possibly giving up the character, maybe starting off with a fair amount of MP).

Comments
Perhaps it's already been thrown in the bucket but...
PREDALIEN wouldn't be such a bad idea for Aliens as a remort class,
nothing much more lethal than a Queen other than that, not trying to feed off the movie but
it'd be probably the strongest type of alien anyone else might mention instead of the
"nameless horror".
skills increased strength, perhaps some secondary shared pred abilities that would apply nothing too extravigant, requirements for skinning up bodies for more points to such and such.
giving them a little more upkeep than bite maim chase.

I always felt that the Alien was not necessarily a human- or anything-else- bred Alien...
but perhaps this is the time when I can move away from that, and we can introduce derivative alien breeds as classes.

Year - aliens as we know it, pop out of just about anything that can take a......without TRYING to be dodgy here....long tube down the throat. Wouldn't a scout be a striker?

Scout would be a striker if it was primarily hit and run to do damage. I was considering that it might be hit-and-run to also slow down or disable the target (making it then easier to kill), "Now you see me, wham! Now you don't... and you're stuck!"
Or possibly by altering battlefield, traps to slow down/momentarily stun targets, then go in for extra strong hits.

So all races will get one of each class (def, stri, lea, con)?

So, if preds had a "psych effect", like a skill such as "roar" that effects all humans, possibly removing any group bonuses if they are affected by it, but it can only affect a person 1/"24hr" period...
Such as "The terrifying roar of a Yautja lusting for your blood makes you forget all about team work"
